1. The darkness sweeps around me;
Anguish on me descends;
Despair and grief confound me;
I search in vain for friends.
Your silence, God, I ponder;
Your absence in my need.
Forsaken, left to wonder,
Why God, do you not heed?
2. In my distress and anguish,
By night and day I cry.
Why am I left to languish?
Why do you not reply?
How different, in our hist’ry,
Deliverance you gave.
Now, shrouded with deep myst’ry
Why, God, do you not save?
3.The scorn that marked Christ’s passion;
The life that he laid down,
’Twas all for my transgression:
Both cross and thorn-filled crown.
Oh, what a faithless story
My human frame portrays.
To Christ be all the glory;
To Christ be all the praise.
4. The leap of faith has brought me,
Through all life’s bitter pain,
To trust the Christ who sought me,
In death, to live again.
O Christ, through your behaviour
Of sacrificial love,
I’ve come to know my Saviour,
And bless my God above.
