William Henry Seward was Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He did several notable things including an early attempt to end the Civil War, averting a war with Great Britain over the same things as the War of 1812, and an attempt to annex islands in the Caribbean and Hawaii.
But he is most famous for a grab for territory that succeeded. In 1867 Seward gave the Russians $7,200,000 for a little place called Alaska. No one saw much value in Alaska, and they made fun of it, calling it "Seward's Folly."
