In the years of the Great Depression in America, the 1930s, a popular network radio program was "Hymns of All Nations," originating in Chicago, Illinois. Joe Emerson, the soloist, suffered a heart attack and a substitute had to be found on short notice. A rather unknown musician was asked to fill in. He had come up with a new hymn that he sang on the broadcast, and it won public acclaim. The hymn was titled, "I'd Rather Have Jesus Than Silver Or Gold." The singer was George Beverly Shea.
