Children's sermon
Object:
car keys, prom flowers
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought two special things with me tonight. One I needed to get here. The other I remember from a long time ago. But you're too young to need either one! (show what you brought) Which one did I need to get here? (let them answer) Yes, I needed my car keys to drive to the church. What do you think these flowers are from? (let them answer) When I was in high school, I went to the prom. It's a special dance and the boys get the girls flowers and the girls get the boys flowers to pin on their tuxes. How many of you have driven a car or gone to a prom? (let them answer) Why not? (let them answer) That's right, you're too young. What else are you too young for? (let them each answer) Some of the answers might be: to stay up later, to watch certain television shows, to go on a date, to vote, to get married, or to have children. What do your parents say when you ask if you can stay up later every night? (let them answer) Most of the time they say to wait until you get older.
Our lesson tonight is a special verse that says that now is the time. It's not the time for staying up later or getting to drive a car or going to the prom, though. Now is a special time for all people. God sent Jesus to the world at a very special time to teach us all kinds of things. God didn't send Jesus only for people who could stay up later or drive a car. God sent Jesus to everyone, no matter what age you are. Today is Ash Wednesday. It's a special day when we remember that God sent Jesus for all of us. We remember that God loves all of us, young and old. God loves us no matter who we are or what we have done. That is really a special time and all of you are old enough because now is the time!
