Active love
Children's sermon
Object:
a hand puppet (Give it a name. The illustration uses
the name "Shep")
Good morning! This morning I brought a friend of mine I love
dearly. (Show the children the puppet.) My friend's name is
"Shep" and I love him ...
SHEP: You love me, you say! How do I know you love me!
ME: You surely know I love you because I say I love you all the time.
SHEP: Yeah, you say you love me, but how do I know? PROVE IT!
ME: I prove my love for you because I take care of you.
SHEP: Anybody would take care of me because I'm so special. Besides that, if you didn't take care of me, people might accuse you of abusing your favorite puppet.
ME: You're right. But I do love you. Besides telling you I love you and taking care of you, I also do extra little things for you. I buy you nice gifts that I know you would enjoy. I remember your birthday. I think of things that mean a lot to you and try to make sure those things happen in your life.
SHEP: It does seem like you love me. You tell me so and you take care of me and you do those special things for me. But how can I know for sure you love me?
Would you ... Would you give up your life to save mine?
ME: That's a good question, Shep. That would prove my love, wouldn't it?
(Turn to the children.) I wouldn't give my life for Shep. Shep is a pretend person -- a puppet. But if someone would do all the things I do for Shep plus give his or her life if ever called to do so, then that would prove that person's love, wouldn't it?
Jesus did that. He gave his life for you and me. He wants us to love others like he loved us -- by saying loving words AND doing loving things. The words alone don't count. It's when we do things for those we love that really shows our love.
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for loving us and dying for us. You must love us a lot. Amen.
