From all directions
Children's sermon
Object:
a compass and an atlas
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought something called a compass with
me today. Does anyone know what a compass is? (Let them respond.) A
compass shows directions. Does anyone know what the names for
directions are? (Let them respond.) They are north, south, east and west.
Let's look at a map of our state and see what direction some cities in our
state are from us. First let's find our city on the map. (Find where you
live.) North is always up on the map. Can you find a city that is up or
north? (Let them respond.) Can you find a city that is south or down from
our city? (Let them respond.) Now east is a little harder. If you are looking
at the map, east is to your right. Let's find a city to the east of our state.
(Let them respond.) West is left as you look at the map. Let's find a city in
the west part of the state. (Repeat the same process with a map of the
United States.) How many churches are in our city? (Let them guess.)
There are ______________ churches in our city. How many churches do
you think are in the rest of the cities all over the state? (Let them guess.)
There are so many, it's hard to count them all. How many do you think are
all across the United States? (Let them guess.) I think there are probably
millions of churches. If we went farther north way up to the top of
Canada, are there churches there? (Let them respond.) How about way
down to the tip of South America? (Point it out on a map or globe.) Yes,
there are churches there, too. There are churches in Africa and even in
what used to be called Russia; there are churches with people worshipping
God, each in their own way.
Our verse today talks about how many directions people come from that will hear about and worship God. It says they come from the north, south, east and west. When you look at a map and a compass you can see how far and from how many directions people hear about God. They hear about God all over the world and in case anyone hasn't heard about God, all those churches keep telling stories about God every week.
