All those saints
Children's sermon
Object:
a flashlight
Good morning, boys and girls. Do any of you know what a saint
is? (Let them answer.) Martin Luther tells us that all who
believe in Jesus are saints. Today we are honoring some special
saints in our congregation who have died and are now with Jesus.
Today is All Saints' Sunday. It is a Sunday that we celebrate all
Christians who have served Christ and who are no longer living.
I brought a flashlight with me because I am going to tell you about one description of heaven -- that's where the saints who have died are with Jesus. This description comes from the Bible in a book called Revelation. It is the last book in the Bible.
I imagine that each of you has wondered what heaven is like. All of us wonder what it is like. In this description, heaven is a wonderful city. It's filled with God's glory. It glows like a precious gem, crystal clear. The description says heaven is so bright that there is no night there. That's why I brought my flashlight. You never need a flashlight there!
In Revelation we learn that the lights of heaven are on all day and night. There isn't even need of a sun or a moon because the glory of God is the light there. It also says that the gates of heaven are never shut, but always open. Nothing evil is permitted there. The persons who are there are those who have served and obeyed Jesus. They are our saints. When the Bible reading is given this morning I want you to listen to it. See if you can hear the description of heaven. See if you can hear the part where heaven is described being so bright that there is no night there. The next time you need a flashlight, think of what it must be like in heaven, where flashlights aren't needed!
