Always new
Children's sermon
Object:
a calendar (and perhaps a sample of old clothes, old toys, or other items that may have outgrown their usefulness)
Good morning! Welcome to the new year. This is now the
year 1998! That will take some getting used to. I went a whole
year calling it 1997 and now it's a new year -- 1998.
What do you think of when you think of the word "old"? (Let
them answer.) When I think of "old" I often think of things that
don't work as well as they once did. I think of things that
maybe need to be thrown away. Everything we see will someday get
old. If you've got new clothes on, someday they will be old
clothes and perhaps become rags. If you've got a new haircut,
someday your hair will grow and you will need still another
haircut. If you've got new toys for Christmas, someday they will
become old toys. Everything new will someday become old. And
when it becomes old, it will probably be replaced with something
new.
That is fine for most of us until we stop to think about
what that means for us as well. The fact that everything new
will someday become old means what to us people? (Let them
answer.) It means that someday we also will be replaced! It
means that we shall someday die.
But have I got good news for you today! You and I shall
never die! Not really. Our bodies may grow old and someday die,
but we shall not die. We shall live forever with God! That is
the promise that Jesus gives us! It is a promise that we know is
true!
Many years ago the apostle named John had a vision -- kind
of like a dream. And in that vision he went to heaven and saw
that in heaven there is no death, no sadness. Nothing grows old
in heaven. Everything is new. Wow! That is really good news.
What a way to start off the new year!
Dear God: You made us and give us the promise of a new life in
heaven. Thank you.
