And suddenly from heaven

Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like to pretend?
(Let them answer.) Today is called Pentecost Sunday. It is a day
when Christians remember that the Holy Spirit came to Jesus'
disciples. This morning we are going to pretend that we were
there with the disciples when the Holy Spirit came to them. As we
pretend we were there we are going to make some motions with our
hands. We are going to be wind, a flame and a mouth. Can you
pretend all those things? (Let them answer.)
(Note: Read this story twice. Read it the first time for children to hear it. When you read it the second time, have children add the actions inserted. The actions are: blowing like a gust of wind; placing both hands above your head and moving all fingers like a flame; making both hands in the shape of a face and mouth (moving the mouth) like a finger shadow.)
I'm going to tell you the story. You listen to it. Then I'll repeat it. When I repeat it you pretend you are wind, a flame and a mouth. Here's the story: "When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind (make a wind sound), and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them (hand above head, move fingers). All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, (make faces with your hands) as the Spirit gave them the ability."
That was very good. You are all very good pretenders. I want you to remember that today is Pentecost Sunday. It is the birthday of the church. It is the day that the Holy Spirit came to the disciples. The Holy Spirit is with us today, too! When we feel Christ's love, we are filled with the Holy Spirit.
