Are you wise?
Children's sermon
Object:
a pair of glasses that fit on the end of your nose, a book, and a rocking chair
Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise. (v. 15)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like to read books? (let them answer) Books are good things, really good things and if we read enough of them about many different things, we grow to be pretty wise. Do you know what it is to be wise? (let them answer) When I think of a wise person, I have a picture in my mind of what a wise person looks like. Do you? (let them answer) My wise person sits in a rocking chair with a book in his or her lap and some glasses that sit right on the end of his or her nose. In the winter, the wise person sits near a wonderful fireplace and, when it is warm, the wise person sits on a porch with a nice breeze. Wise people think a lot. They also listen a lot to all kinds of good things. They listen to music, to the birds, to conversations between people, and they love children. A wise person also prays a lot and worships God. A wise person knows about God's great power and God's great goodness. The wise person believes that God loves him/her. This is my idea of a wise person.
The Bible talks about wise people and how they stay out of trouble. Wise people are not interested in the things the devil likes. Wise people do not hate or do ugly things. A real wise person reads good books, listens to good television programs, and shares his/her life with people that are loving and kind.
It is not easy to be a wise person. Sometimes you think that wise people don't have a lot of fun. Wise people are the kinds of people that work hard to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and enjoy the good things in the world.
Wise people do not seem to be in a rush because they have a plan for each day. They begin their day with prayer and they end the day with prayer. A wise person has time for everything. He/she has a time to learn, a time to think, a time to listen, and a time to share with others. Wise people are not afraid. They trust God to take care of the world and they know that it is important for them to do good work. The good work that they do makes life better for other people.
How many of you would like for people to think that you are a wise person? (let them answer) You don't have to wear glasses, sit in a rocking chair, or have a book in your lap. Looking wise isn't the most important part. The most important part of being wise is to know God and what God is calling you to do and then doing it.
The next time you see a very wise person remember what the Bible teaches about living your life as Jesus lived his life. Jesus trusted God in every way and loved his neighbors as God loved him. Amen.
