Ashes, ashes
Children's sermon
Object:
ashes (from the Ash Wednesday service, if appropriate)
These ashes are all that is left of the palms we used in the
Palm Sunday service last year. Do you remember when we had the
palms? What did we do with them? (Let them answer.) And now all
that's left of those green palms are these black ashes!
Like it or not, everything is changing. Sometimes we look at all that is changing and we don't like what we see. Why is that? (Let them answer.) When we see the green grass die and dry up or the flower lose its petals and die, then we are reminded that everything that lives will someday die. Since I am living, that means that someday I will also die. I don't like thinking about that because I like this life.
Everything is changing. That is a fact. The good news is that those who believe in Jesus will become new! Isn't that wonderful! We will become a new person because of Jesus. Even death cannot touch us.
These palm ashes will never again be green like they were. But when I die and my body turns to dust like this, I know that Jesus will raise me and make me new just as he was raised and made new. That's really good news!
