Attract and repel
Children's sermon
Object:
two magnets and items which are attracted to them and repelled from them
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a magnet. Does anyone know when magnets were really discovered? (wait for a show of hands) Magnets were discovered about 800 years before Jesus was born. What does a magnet do? (let them answer) It attracts things. If you drop a box of straight pins on the floor, they're easy to pick up with a magnet. They almost jump up to it! Does a magnet pick everything up? (let them respond) No, it only picks up certain things. Let's see what it picks up and what it doesn't. (lay out the items and try each one) Some things are attracted to the magnet and some things aren't. What happens when you put the ends of two magnets next to each other? (demonstrate and let them answer) One end is attracted to one end of the other magnet, but if you turn one magnet away, it is almost pushed away. We call that repelling. Magnets are fun to learn about and fun to play with as you learn.
Our lesson today is not about magnets. But it reminds me of magnets. I think Jesus was like a magnet because so many people followed Jesus and loved to listen to the stories Jesus told about God and loving other people. Jesus was like a magnet because there were so many people who were attracted to Jesus. But in our lesson today there were some other people who didn't like Jesus. Jesus said that even after he told the people that God chose him to tell about God, some of the people just didn't believe him. They were like the things that just weren't attracted to the magnet. Some of them were even like the two magnets when you turn the wrong ends to each other. They almost jumped away from Jesus. They were repelled instead of attracted to Jesus.
We like to hear about God's love from the stories of Jesus, so we are followers of Jesus. We're attracted to the magnet. The magnet is Jesus!
