Attracted to Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a beautiful painting and an attractive frame, or a beautiful gold chain displayed on some black velvet
Good morning, boys and girls. I want you to look at this painting. I think all of us would agree that the painter is very good. But it doesn't look finished. What do you think we need to do to this painting to make it look finished? (let them answer) Yes, it needs a frame. Let me put this beautiful picture in the frame that came with the picture. Does this make the picture look better? (let them answer) Let me show you something else. When you go into a jewelry store the clerk in the store will let you look at all of the jewelry. But if you ask the clerk to take it out of the glass case for closer inspection, the clerk will always lay it on some black velvet. Let's see if it makes a difference. Here is a beautiful gold chain. Isn't it pretty? (let them answer) But now, let's take a look at the gold chain after I place it on some black velvet. Does the black velvet make it look better? (let them answer) It does, doesn't it?
There were a lot of people who wondered if Jesus was someone special. He looked like other people. He wore the same kind of clothes and ate the same food. He spoke like other people spoke. He had friends, a mother and father, brothers and sisters, and grew up in a village called Nazareth. What made Jesus different from all of the other people? (let them answer) One thing made Jesus different than all people.
It was God within Jesus that made him different. When Jesus healed, it was God healing. When Jesus taught, it was God teaching. When Jesus forgave sins, it was God forgiving sins. When Jesus performed a miracle, it was God working. God drew people to Jesus like a picture in a beautiful frame draws you to look at it or like a beautiful gold chain on black velvet draws you to its beauty.
The next time you are in a great art museum or a very fancy jewelry store, I want you to see how the frame draws you to a picture or the black velvet draws you to the beautiful necklace. Then you can remember how God draws you to Jesus. We are so happy that God wants us to know him better. And the way we know God better is to be attracted to Jesus and feel his great love. That is God's plan and it is a good one.
