Authority from heaven
Children's sermon
Object:
a diploma
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought something called a
diploma with me this morning. (Show the diploma.) Does anyone
know what a diploma is? A diploma states that someone graduated
from (high school, college or a specific trade). My diploma means
that I graduated from (name the school) and that I know something
about (name the subject graduated in). It means that I have some
authority in my subject. That means that I know about (name the
subject).
My diploma and the authority that it gives me reminds me about today's lesson. In the lesson Jesus took his disciples to a hill where he started his ministry. That was a good place to go for one of the final times that Jesus would be with his disciples.
Jesus told his disciples to go out and tell everybody they could about the good news of God. Here's the part of the story where my diploma comes in. Jesus told his followers that all authority in heaven and earth was given to him. In a way, Jesus is telling his disciples that he, too, has a diploma. His diploma is from God. His diploma gave him the authority to do many things. One of those things was to tell his disciples to go and tell all the world about God. Jesus told his disciples to baptize all people who believed in God. Jesus gave them the authority to use three names when speaking about God. Those three names are Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Can you repeat those with me? (Have them say "Father, Son and Holy Spirit"). We call these three names for God "the Trinity." Trinity means three-in-one. Jesus is part of the Trinity of God.
Today is called Trinity Sunday. It's a day that we remember that God has three names. More important, it is a day that we remember that God gave Jesus all authority in heaven and on earth. In a way, it is like God giving Jesus a diploma. Because of it, we know that Jesus is part of God and the Holy Spirit.
