"Bad news; good news"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Some children get quite frightened by
all the bad things that happen in the world around us. It is
reported in the newspaper and on television. Even today's Gospel
text seems to be bad news about war, earthquakes, famines, and
plagues. The core good news is that God is with us no matter
what! Furthermore, this place is not our home -- heaven is!
* Have the children draw pictures of what they think heaven
is like.
* Have the children draw pictures of themselves and God, who
is always with them.
* Today's special focus is on the Conversion of Saint Paul.
Study the story of how Paul, on the road to Damascus, was met by
the living Jesus. This encounter totally changed Paul's life
orientation.
* God still changes lives. The church must never forget
that fact. Children can understand the power of the Gospel of
Jesus Christ. If you have a story of a spiritual encounter,
share it now.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Tell how Paul was converted on the Damascus Road and share
how Jesus brings new life. (You might even be able to connect
this to the coming New Year of the Chinese, Koreans and
Vietnamese on January 28 -- or our own New Year nearly a month
old already.)
* Sing "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" or "My Lord, What a
Morning" or some hymn about the promise of heaven. (The "Hope"
section of your hymnal might be helpful here.)
