Bandages and God
Children's sermon
Object:
adhesive bandage
Today I wonder if any of you have any "ouchies" -- sores on
your body? Does anybody have a cut they want to use this bandage
on? This is why we have things like bandages, isn't it? Bandages
help sores get better. They protect the sore from infections and
other hurts that might come if we didn't have such protection.
Today's lesson is about a time when Jesus was really hurt. Can you tell me about some of his hurts? (Let them talk about the crucifixion on their own terms. The pains of the crucifixion should not be vividly elaborated on by the teller of this object lesson.)
When you have pain, what do you think about? Let's pretend I take your hand and squeeze it real tight -- what will you think about? Will you think about the weather? What's for lunch? No -- you'll probably think about the pain in your hand.
Jesus was in pain and so were two other men. One man was angry at Jesus for not saving himself and the other two as well. "Surely, if you are the Messiah, you can save yourself and us too?" he questioned.
People do that to God whenever there is pain. They wonder why God allows it and why God doesn't do something about it. My answer: I DON'T KNOW WHY.
When you have big ouchies in your life -- it is okay to ask God to take away some of the pain. But if God does not take away the pain, then we just let God be God and accept the pain and the fact that God has reasons that are too much for our little minds to comprehend.
