Baptized into the body
Children's sermon
Object:
the baptismal font and a picture of the human body (from
a medical book or encyclopedia)
Good morning! Today is Pentecost, the day we celebrate the
birthday of the church. It was on this day that the Holy Spirit
descended on the believers 2,000 years ago and gave them the
power to become a church. (Expand your description as desired.)
Now, the church is often compared to a body. Here is a
picture of the human body. You can see that the body has a lot of
parts, actually millions and millions of parts. It is truly
"fearfully and wonderfully made," as the Bible says. And just as
God created the human body, so God also created the church. The
church also has millions of parts. What are the parts the church
is made up of? (Let them answer.) The church is made up of
millions of people like you and me. We are the church. How did
you and I become a part of the church? (Let them answer.) Look
over there at that (show them the baptismal font). When we were
baptized, we became members of the church. We became part of this
body called The Church.
Now let me ask you something. If you injure some part of
your body, let's say your finger, does that affect the rest of
your body? Do you just ignore it, or do you do whatever is
necessary to fix that finger? (Let them answer.) Yes, of course,
we get our finger fixed. That's the way it should work in the
church. If one person is hurting, we all hurt, and we do what we
can to help that member. Do you see why the church is called a
body? (Let them answer.)
Okay, let's ask our Father in Heaven to keep our body safe
and healthy.
Dear Father: We thank You so much for making us a part of Your
Body, the Church. Please help us keep our body healthy and strong
as we reach out to make people part of this body. Amen.
