Be humble
Children's sermon
Object:
a big balloon and a small balloon
For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves
will be exalted. (v. 14b)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about being humble. Do you know what being humble is about? (let them answer) A humble person is someone that doesn't think they are the greatest, or the best, or the prettiest. Humble people are not loud or braggers. Humble people believe they are part of the human family and not better than everyone else.
I brought along two balloons today to show what humble is all about. This small balloon is a happy balloon. He is glad to show up at birthday parties or be tied to the handlebars of a bike. This little balloon loves to make people happy and doesn't mind being used in a game or hit gently in the air from one person to the other.
The other balloon is a big balloon. He is something else. Whenever I blow my big balloon up, he is always asking me if he looks good, if he is bigger than any other balloon, and if I can keep him away from people. He wants to be left alone and doesn't like people to touch him. He keeps telling me that people have dirty hands and they are always trying to take him to parades and things like that. Once I took him to a parade and all he could say was, "Boring, boring." My big balloon was hardly any fun at all. He was so concerned about how big he was and how pretty he was that he wanted to keep away from others.
Which balloon do you think is the humble balloon? (let them answer) Which balloon do you think is a big show off? (let them answer) You are right, the big balloon is really a bore. He is all air and not much else. As a matter of fact, I thought I would teach the big balloon a good lesson. Did you know that I have been just holding the big balloon to show you what happens to a balloon that isn't humble. (let them answer) Watch very closely and see what you think about a bragging balloon. (release the balloon and allow the loss of air to take it where it goes) That big balloon will not be back in a while and I can't use him to tell Bible stories because he thinks too much of himself.
The small balloon is humble and we will keep him around so that children can play with him, take him to parades and birthday parties, and anywhere else he wants to go.
Jesus loves humble people and he really likes to work with them. Someday you may feel that Jesus is calling you to be one of his own disciples. You will remember quickly that being with Jesus is being at the best place all of the time. Amen.
