Be patient
Children's sermon
Object:
building blocks
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought some blocks to play with because
part of my story today is about blocks. Once there was a mom. She had two
children. One of them was three years old. He was always hungry. From the
time he was a baby he was hungry. He would eat and eat and eat until his
mom decided that she should not let him keep eating so much. As long as
the food was in front of him, he kept on eating. He was also a very active
boy. That's probably why he was always hungry. Are any of you hungry all
the time? (Wait for show of hands.) The little boy's mom also had his baby
sister to take care of and the cooking and the cleaning and the washing.
The boy's mom worked hard at home while the boy's dad worked at a
school. The boy's mom was so busy with the cooking and cleaning and
washing and the baby sister that sometimes it seemed he had to wait
forever to get something to eat. Do you ever have to wait and wait for your
food? (Let them respond.) He would say, "Mom, I'm hungry. Can I have a
cracker?" And she would say, "I'm busy right now. Just be patient."
Pretty soon he'd say, "I'm thirsty. Can I have some apple juice?" And she
would say, "In a minute, be patient." She was always telling him to be
patient. It's very hard to wait and be patient. One day the little boy was
building with his blocks. Can you help me build? (Let them build with the
blocks.) He wasn't building in his bedroom, but right in the middle of the
kitchen floor because he liked to be where his mom was. She was rushing
around as usual and she was ready to sweep the floor. But he wasn't
through building with his blocks. She said a little crossly, "Hurry up, I'm
ready to sweep. You'll have to move. I'm in a hurry." But he kept right on
building and while he was building he said, "I'll be done in a minute. Just
be patient." The mom stopped her hurrying and sat down on the floor and
helped him build. She was always busy and hurrying so much, she had
forgotten what it was like to be little and always waiting and patient. But
her little boy helped her remember.
Our lesson today is about someone else who is very patient with us. Do you know who it is? (Let them guess.) It's God. God is patient and waits and waits for us to remember how to love and take our time to enjoy each other. The little boy and his mom learned that as they played with the blocks.
