Beating the devil
Children's sermon
Object:
A Bible
Good morning! Once, Jesus went out in the desert and was all
alone for forty days with nothing to eat. When he was very weak,
the devil came to him and tempted him three different ways. The
devil was trying to get Jesus to do something that would offend
God. If the devil had been successful in tempting him, Jesus would
never have been able to do what he came to earth to do, that is,
to save all of us and make it possible for us to go to Heaven.
Aren't you glad that the mean old devil wasn't successful in
tempting Jesus to do something wrong? (Let them answer.)
Well, we can all learn something from the way Jesus resisted
all the temptations of the devil. Each time the devil tempted him,
Jesus said to him, "It is written," and then he quoted something
from the Bible. He used the Word of God to beat the devil. Does
that give you any ideas about how you can resist a temptation to
do something wrong? (Let them answer.) Yes, of course, we can also
use the Word of God to beat the devil.
But, we don't always have a Bible with us and even if we did,
it might be hard to find exactly what we want in it. What then
should we do? (Let them answer.) Well, I guess we need to study
our Bible and learn what is in it so we can use it in time of
need. Jesus had no Bible with him, but he knew what was in it and
was able to use it against the devil. We will never know it as
well as Jesus did, but we can continue to study it and memorize
verses that we can use in our time of need. Do you think that's a
good idea? (Let them answer.) Yes, it is! We need to read our
Bible and study what God is telling us in it as long as we live.
Dear Jesus: Thank you for resisting the devil when he tempted you.
Help us to do the same. Amen.
