"Beating the devil"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Fighting temptation is a lifelong battle
for every believer. Our children, like ourselves, will always be
fighting the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil.
The focus of this week's Gospel is on what Jesus did when he faced
the temptations of the devil in the wilderness. He beat the devil
by using the Word of God!
*Look up the passages of Scripture that Jesus used to ward
off the devil's temptations (Deuteronomy 8:3, 6:13, 6:16). Have
some of the older children role-play the temptations of Jesus in
the wilderness using the words of Luke's Gospel. Select one child
to play the devil and use the devil's words. Select another to
play Jesus, who responds to each temptations with the Word of God.
Have a discussion after the role-play on the value of overcoming
temptation by using the Word of God. If you have made a sword as
suggested below for the opening, you may want the child playing
Jesus to hold that sword and touch the devil with it as he/she
quotes the Scriptures.
*In Romans 10:13 we read that calling on the name of the Lord
in time of temptation can be beneficial. Have a "calling contest"
with the younger children. Divide them into two groups facing each
other. The idea is to call out to the Lord as loudly as possible.
You may let them use their own words or give them words like,
"Jesus, save me!" Select someone to judge the contest and see
which individual and which team calls out the loudest. It may be
advisable to do this outside if the weather permits or in an area
where the yelling will not distract others.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Make a sword and label it the "Sword of the Spirit." Show
that the Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God as related in
Ephesians 6:17. With this sword, we can defeat the devil when we
are tempted.
