Beautiful feet!
Children's sermon
Object:
a beauty kit containing lipstick, mascara, blush, and so
forth (an alternative is to bring cutouts of attractive people
from magazines)
Good morning! Today I want to talk about beauty. I have with
me a beauty kit that people use to make themselves more
attractive. Many people put this on themselves. Have you seen
people put on lipstick before? (Let them answer.) What part of
the body gets the beauty treatment? (Let them answer.) The face
gets most of the attention. When we look at people, we usually
look at their faces. Our faces are important.
Today's reading says that there is another part of the body that is beautiful. Who can tell me what part the apostle Paul said is "beautiful"? (Let them answer.) Paul says, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"
The feet? Did I read that right? How many of you think that feet are beautiful? (Let them answer.) When I think of beauty, I almost never think of feet. Feet are useful and I use my feet every day. They carry the rest of me from one place to another. But I don't think of them as beautiful.
Why do you think the apostle Paul said that feet are beautiful? (Let them answer.) He tells us why they are "beautiful" -- they "bring good news!" In other words, feet are not necessarily beautiful to look at, but they do something very important. They carry one person to another so that one person can tell another the good news about Jesus.
Jesus wants all people to know about him. Jesus wants everyone to know the good news about God's love. Many people don't know this news. You may have friends or neighbors who really don't understand that the church is like a good news store where people come to hear good news and how that good news makes their lives better. As the people of good news, we want to share that good news everywhere we can.
Your Sunday church school teacher has "beautiful feet" when he or she explains to you the good news we have with Jesus. Your parents have "beautiful feet" when they tell you about Jesus. And, since I am telling about the good news of Jesus today, I have beautiful feet!
Dear Jesus: Thank you for your good news. Thank you for the people who tell us this good news each week. Help us tell the whole world about you. Amen.
