The best gift
Children's sermon
Object:
A wrapped Christmas gift with a baby Jesus from a
manger scene inside. If you have a manger scene in your
sanctuary, try using the baby Jesus from it.
Merry Christmas boys and girls! Christmas is an exciting time
isn't it? (Let them answer.) What is the best part of Christmas?
(Let them answer.) Right, it is opening presents. I brought a
present that I want to share with you in just a moment. (Show
your gift.)
Christmas is more than just receiving gifts. It's giving gifts, isn't it? (Let them answer.) I'm sure that most of you have gifts that you will be giving your mom and dad, and other family members.
Why do you suppose that we give gifts at Christmas? (Let them answer.) It could be that the wise men gave gifts to baby Jesus. I have another idea about gifts. I want you to think about this. In our Bible story it says that God gave himself to us. That's a gift, isn't it? (Let them answer.) Our Bible story tells why he gave himself to us. He wants to rescue us from bad things that might happen to us. He also wants us to be boys and girls who are happy to do good things.
Now let's open the gift and see what's inside. (Open it yourself, invite your minister to open it, or have a young child open it. Then show it.) It's baby Jesus from the manger scene. This is what God gave all of us at Christmas. So when you are opening your presents today (or tomorrow morning) remember what Christmas is. It's a gift from God. Remember that God gave us the gift of Jesus at Christmas. Jesus is the best gift of all. God gave us Jesus to save us from bad things that may happen to us. God gave us Jesus so that we will be happy to do good things for others.
