The best size
Children's sermon
Object:
a mustard seed
The Lord replied, "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to
this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you." (v.
6)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today I want to talk about size. How many of you know what the word "size" means? (let them answer) Size means how big or how small something is. For instance, your shoes come in sizes. Do you know what your shoe size is? (let them answer) My shoe size is 10 1/2. Some people have a size 4 or a size 7. If you have a big shoe, the size is a big number, and if you have a small size, then you have a small shoe.
What else comes in sizes? (let them answer) Shirts, pants, coats, socks, and almost everything we wear comes in a size. What else has a size? (let them answer) Medicine, food, and toothpaste come in sizes. Boats come in sizes. Almost anything we can think about has a size. Most people think that the bigger the size, the better it is. Not everything that is big is necessarily good. If you have a big burn on your arm it is worse than a tiny burn. If you have a big score in golf it is not as good as a small score. It always depends on what you are talking about.
Today I brought with me something that is very small. It is a mustard seed. When you plant a mustard seed in the ground you can hardly see it. But when the mustard seed grows into a plant it becomes very big.
Jesus was talking one day with some people about their faith. He told them that a tiny bit of faith is stronger than almost anything they know. Faith in God, even small faith, makes big things happen. Jesus said a little bit of faith in God could move big trees. People don't use their faith to move trees but they do use their faith to make big changes. Sometimes people want to make friends with someone that does not seem to like them. Asking God to teach you how to make friends usually works. It only takes a little bit of faith to make friends. Our faith in God can make us well. It doesn't take a lot of faith -- just a little. We learn about faith by trying it every day. Like exercise, the more times we try faith, the better it gets. Pretty soon our faith is so great that we don't think about it as exercise but as just the way we live.
God gives all of us faith. It may seem little now, but when you start using it a lot it will grow and grow. You can have a giant size faith if you practice it every day. Remember the mustard seed. Remember how small it is as a seed, but when it is planted, it grows into one of the biggest plants. We want your faith to grow as big as that mustard seed tree, bigger than you can even imagine. Begin exercising your faith today and grow a big faith. Amen.
