Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. (v. 10)
Good morning, boys and girls. Did Jesus go to church? (let them answer) Was Jesus a preacher? (let them answer) Did Jesus have a lot of friends in the ministry like I do as the pastor of this church? (let them answer)
Jesus certainly went to a house of worship. It was called a synagogue. Can you say synagogue? (ask them to repeat it several times) Jesus was called a rabbi. It means teacher or "great one." Jesus was a great teacher about the person of God. Jesus had many friends, some of them were rabbis and some of them were priests. We are told of people like Simon, who was a priest, and the father of John the Baptist, who was a priest. Jesus also had friends that were Pharisees like Joseph and Nicodemus. Jesus also preached in some of the synagogues like the one in Capernaum. Jesus loved to teach and to help people learn that God was a person of great love as well as justice.
One day, Jesus was in this synagogue and he was teaching. He probably had a scroll in his hands. How many of you know what a scroll is? (let them answer) Our teachers use books and chalk and blackboards. But Jesus was teaching when he looked around and saw a woman that was all bent over. Her head almost touched her knees she was so bent. He must have asked one of the students how long she had been like this and she told him that she had been like that for eighteen years. She must have really hurt but she was not complaining. Jesus walked down to her and put his hands on her and told her that she was healed and that she could straighten up and walk like other people walked. All at once she knew she was healed and after she straightened up she began praising God in a loud voice. Everyone heard her and I am sure they began to praise God, also.
Everyone was so happy except the leader of the synagogue. He was angry and began to walk toward Jesus telling him that he had broken the law of the sabbath. No one was supposed to work on the sabbath and the leader said that Jesus had worked when he healed the woman. He walked around beating the ground with his walking stick and shouting at Jesus and everyone else.
Jesus let him finish shouting. Then he said to the angry man, "You take better care of your animals on the sabbath than you do your people. If someone was bound like the woman was by Satan then there is no better day to free her from her misery than on the day of the Lord." The leader thought about what he had done and how he had acted and was filled with shame. The rest of the people began rejoicing again and praising God for the things that Jesus was doing. Amen.
