The Bible is a map
Children's sermon
Object:
a map and a Bible
I have a question for you. If I need to get somewhere but I don't know the way, what do I use? A map! (hold up your map and open it) See this? If I need directions, I can use this. I know which roads to take, and I can see how I am going to get where I need to go. Maps are very useful tools.
Now I've got a question that's a little harder. If I want to know how to live, what can I use? Is there anything like a map for how to make good decisions and live the right way? (responses) There is. It's called the Bible. The Bible is God's word and a collection of stories about God's people. We read from the Bible every Sunday in church, and many of you read it at home too. The Bible has lots of lessons in it. There are stories about some of the good things God's people have done. There are also stories about mistakes that people have made. The writers of the Bible gave us these stories so that we can learn how we should live. We can appreciate the good things and learn from the bad things.
That's why we have this time together each week. We read together a passage from the Bible and then we try to learn what it means. Sometimes what we read is easy to understand. Sometimes the words are hard to understand. The Bible has some complicated lessons. Sometimes people need to spend a lot of time studying and praying before they figure out what God is really saying.
The biggest thing to remember is that the Bible is one of God's many gifts to us. It's a roadmap that we can use when we need to learn which way to go. Our lives are full of decisions and pathways. It's not always easy to know which pathway we should take. God understands that, and that's one of the reasons why he has given us the Bible. Next time you are lost, see what the Bible has to say about what to do.
Prayer: God, you have given us a wonderful gift. Thank you for giving us the Bible -- a map that can help us understand which way to go. Amen.
