The big book
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: In case you didn't know it, angels are
in! There are angel clubs, angel publications, angel books, angel
mail order catalogues, angel figurines, plates, paintings, and
prints. Some may be tempted to worship the "messengers" (that's
what "angel" means) over the sender of the message -- God.
*Invite members of the congregation to contribute to an angel collectors' show in your Sunday school or church.
*On this St. Michael and All Angels Day set up a display of angels in the narthex of the church building. Ahead of time, invite members of the congregation and the children to contribute to this display.
*Look up the various names of angels in the Bible: Michael, Lucifer, Gabriel, and so forth. *Look up the meanings of the names of the angels in a Bible dictionary.
*Ask: "Is it possible for a human being to be an angel?" (You might get some interesting responses to this question.) Point out the meaning of the word "angel" and ask the question again. Your class will see that we are all messengers of God in some way or another. We tell others about God by our actions and words. We can be angels in what we say and do to and for others.
*The value God places on our names and our personhood is the theme of today's object lesson. Our names are written in heaven! Show the children the church record of their names or their parents' names. Tell the value of good church records and how important life events such as baptism, marriage, confirmation, and death are recorded in the church record book.
