A big change
Children's Activity
SHARING THIS WEEK'S GOSPEL THEME AT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND AT
HOME
This is an activity for older children. Younger children could observe as an adult does the activity.
Materials:
Baby food jars with lids
Leaves from various trees
Coffee filters precut into strips
Rubbing alcohol
Shallow pan
Hot tap water
Scotch tape
Pen
Plastic spoon
Directions:
1. Have the children label baby food jars with the type of tree or location of where various leaves had been collected.
2. Have the children cut or tear the leaves into small pieces, being careful to keep them separated.
3. Have the children put one leaf into its correspondingly labeled baby food jar. Pour enough alcohol into each jar to cover the leaf.
4. Have the children stir the leaf/alcohol mixture.
5. Have the children replace the lids without tightening them.
6. Prepare the shallow pan by placing one inch of hot tap water in it.
7. Direct the children to place the jars in the pan and have the children swirl the leaf/alcohol mixtures around once every five minutes.
8. Check the water temperature, replacing more hot water if it has cooled down. After thirty minutes, the leaves should be ready.
9. Carefully, have the children open the jars and place one end of the filter in the leaf/alcohol mixture.
10. Direct the children to tape the other end to the outside of the jar.
11. Let these jars sit until the children return the following week. The children will be surprised to see a variety of colors and shades have changed the coffee filters into a "rainbow" of nature's colors.
