A big new word
Children's sermon
Object:
a piece of poster board with the word "intercessor" on it
Today I am going to teach you a big new word. It's a great word, and you're really going to impress your Sunday school teachers when you tell them you know it. Are you ready? Okay. The word is "intercessor." (Hold up the poster board.) Pretty big word, isn't it?
Our Bible verse writer is an intercessor. Listen to me read the verse again for you. See if you can figure out what I am talking about. I'll give you a hint: an intercessor is a person who prays in a certain way. (Read the verse again.) Can you tell me what you think the word means? (See if the children are able to figure it out.)
An intercessor is a person who prays for other people. Most of the time we pray for ourselves: we ask God to help us with something; we ask God to forgive us for doing something wrong. When we are intercessors, though, we are not praying for ourselves at all. We are praying for God to help other people. In today's lesson the scripture writer is writing a letter to some people far away. He tells them that he has been praying for them and asking God to help them. Listen to the verse again. See if you can tell what the writer is praying for the people. (Read the verse again.)
Can you tell? The scripture writer is praying that the people will be filled with the knowledge of God's will. In other words, he prays that the people will know how to live lives that make God happy. What are some things that we can pray for other people? (Spend some time talking with the children about their prayer ideas. Get lots of suggestions before going on with the lesson.) These are some great ideas of things we can pray for other people. It's good to pray for ourselves, but it is important that we pray for others too. During our prayer time today, I will give us all a chance to say a prayer for someone else. Let us pray.
Prayer: Dear God, listen to us as we pray for other people. (Spend a moment in silence so children can offer their prayers.) Thank you for hearing our prayers today. Amen.
