Big things from a small boy
Children's sermon
Object:
a children's Bible picture of David and Goliath
Our verse today says that "God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong." To help understand what that means, I'm going to share with you a story from another part of the Bible. It's found in First Samuel, chapter 17. It's the story of David and Goliath. Does anyone know this story? (see if any children are familiar with it) The story takes place during a time when the people of God, the Israelites, were at war with the Philistines. Goliath was a giant warrior for the Philistine army. The Bible says he was over nine feet tall! Every day he would stand in front of the Israelite people and shout mean things about them and about God. He was full of hate and anger for them and for their God.
No one would fight him because he was so big and mean. They were scared of him. Finally, one person agreed to fight him. A young shepherd boy named David did not like it that Goliath was saying mean things about God. So, he took his slingshot and five stones out onto the field where Goliath was standing. Goliath couldn't believe that a small boy would challenge his strength. Nobody could. They all thought David would be killed for sure. They were wrong, though. David shouted that God would give him the strength to do it. "The battle is the Lord's!" he shouted. With that, he whipped a stone at Goliath and defeated him. Tiny David defeated the giant Goliath and helped his country have victory.
Now that isn't the way we should settle things today, but in that particular situation in that particular time, God used someone weak to shame someone strong. God showed that through him, all things are possible. All people can do great things when God is on their side -- even you and me. Let's pray.
Prayer: Father, give us your strength when we are weak. Help us be like David, able to do great and mighty things. Amen.
