a pillow

Good morning, boys and girls. It's almost Christmas and there was a special baby born a long time ago at Christmas. Do you know who it was? (let them answer) That's right, it was Jesus. Jesus was that special baby. I thought we'd talk about babies today so I brought a pillow. What do you think babies have to do with pillows? (let them answer) If some of you have had a new baby brother or sister not too long ago, you might have seen your mom and dad going to a special class and they took a pillow with them. Do you think they took it to sleep with? (let them answer) No, they took it to do special exercises and to practice what to do when the baby came. How many of you ever saw your parents go off to class with a pillow? (wait for a show of hands) People get very excited when they find out they're going to have a baby. Sometimes they call all their relatives and get very excited when they tell them they're going to have a baby. They pick out names for the baby and everyone has good suggestions for names. Sometimes they fix a special room for the baby. They clean up the crib or they get a new one. They get tiny clothes for the baby. They buy diapers and blankets. Even though the baby can't sit up right after it is born, they get a high chair and a playpen. People get all excited getting ready for a baby to be born. They want to be all ready for the baby.
Our lesson today is about a special mother named Mary. Mary was going to be the mother of Jesus. Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth was so excited when she found out that Mary was going to have a baby. She told Mary that Mary was very special to be chosen to be the mother of such a special baby.
Getting ready for all babies is a special, exciting time. There's lots to do to get ready. Mary probably didn't go to special classes with her pillow to learn all about how babies are born and how to breathe when the baby was born. Mary probably didn't go and buy a crib and playpen and a baby swing. But Elizabeth still was excited and told Mary how special she was to be the mother of that special baby Jesus. As we get ready for Christmas, remember the special baby and his special mother, Mary.
