Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a banana with me this
morning. I love to eat bananas. When I am hungry for a snack, I
can eat a banana and it will fill me up. Do you like bananas?
(Let them answer.)
One day Jesus was teaching people. Many people were listening to him. Jesus talked to the people about many important things. One of the things he talked about was a word called "righteousness." That's a big word. It means being good. It also means doing the right thing, or the correct thing. Jesus said that if you hunger to be a good person you will be a good person. You will be filled.
Have you ever been with some of your friends. Maybe one of them did something that you felt was wrong? Maybe you knew it was wrong at the time, but you did it anyway. After it was over, you might have wished that you didn't do it. If you've ever felt that way, you are a good person -- you are a righteous person. You want to do the right thing. You want to do what is good. Sometimes it is hard to do the right thing. Sometimes it is hard to know what the right thing is. Many people, even adults, have a hard time knowing what the right thing is. Jesus said that anyone (point to children and call them by name) who tries to be good will be a happy person. Have you ever felt happy after you did something good? (Let them answer.) Jesus said if you want to be a good person it is like eating your favorite food. If you are hungry for something and you eat enough of it, you will be filled. If you hunger to be a good person, God will help you. God will bless you. That means to me that when I eat my favorite fruit I will be filled. If I want to be a good person, with God's help I will be. You will be, too.
