Bread from heaven
Children's sermon
Object:
a loaf of baked bread
Good morning, boys and girls. Do any of you ever think about heaven? (let them answer) What do you think heaven is really like? (see if you can get a response from each child) Most of you think that heaven is a beautiful place, don't you? (let them answer) Do you think it is peaceful? (let them answer) Do you know anyone who lives there now? (let them answer) Do you think Jesus lives in heaven? (let them answer) Those are some pretty good ideas and I hope that we will remember what we talked about today.
Jesus talked a lot about heaven. Jesus believed that his Father had sent him to people like you and me to talk about heaven. Sometimes, Jesus compared heaven to a wonderful feast like Thanksgiving or a wedding feast. How many of you remember last Thanksgiving? (let them answer) When we talk about a great feast, we usually mention the kind of meat, like turkey or ham or chicken, we had to eat. We also talk about the mashed potatoes and gravy or sweet potatoes. And then there are the great desserts, like mince pie or pumpkin pie. Some people like cake and there are always special treats like candy and wonderful drinks. These are the foods that we talk about, but the one food that we eat on Thanksgiving or at a wedding that we don't mention is bread. How many of you like bread? (let them answer) I really like bread. I like it with butter and jelly or just plain.
I brought along a loaf of bread that was just baked. Doesn't it look good?
Jesus said he was the bread that came down from that wonderful place we call heaven. Jesus said that anyone who eats this special bread would live in heaven forever. This special bread called Jesus is something so special that when we take him into our hearts we are filled with love. That is why when we are filled up on Jesus we are close to being in heaven.
So the next time you see a nice loaf of bread I want you to remember that Jesus called himself the Bread of Heaven. We should pray that God will fill us up with the Bread of Heaven so that our hearts are filled with kindness and joy and love. Then we can go out, looking up, praising God, and thanking him for coming to us not only on special days but every day that we live. We eat bread every day, we love Jesus every day and some day we will be with Jesus our God in heaven every day. That will really be a special day.
