The bread of life
Children's sermon
Object:
some bread and a Bible
Good morning! What is this I'm holding in my hand? (Show the
bread and let them answer.) Yes, this is bread. Bread is
certainly not something unusual. We probably see some every day.
It comes in all kinds of forms. There are loaves of bread, and
rolls and bread sticks and biscuits and muffins. And there are
lots of different kinds of bread like white, whole wheat,
sourdough, and so forth. Why do we eat bread? (Let them answer.)
Of course, we eat bread for the same reason we eat any other
food. It is fuel for our body. We have to eat or we will die. We
will starve to death.
Now, Jesus has told us that he is the "bread of life." What
do you think he means by that? (Let them answer.) He certainly
doesn't mean that he is a loaf of ordinary bread that people eat
to keep from starving. He means that he is spiritual bread, the
kind of spiritual food that we need to keep our spirit from
starving. Just as your body needs this kind of food to keep from
starving (show the bread), your spirit also needs to be fed or it
will starve. Now where do you think we can go to get this
spiritual bread of life that Jesus tells us about? (Let them
answer.) We go to the Bible. (Show the Bible.) That's where we
find Jesus, the bread of life. We need to read the Bible or
listen as others read it and talk about it. That's how we get the
spiritual food that we need.
Let's thank Jesus for coming into the world to be our bread
of life.
Dear Jesus, our bread of life: We thank you for coming into the
world, teaching us about God, and dying on the cross to pay for
our sins. You truly are the bread of life and we know that you
will feed us good spiritual food whenever we read or listen to
your word in the Bible. Amen.
