The bread of life
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Jesus tells us that he is the "bread of
life." By this he means that he is the spiritual food that will
sustain us and give us eternal life. To get this concept across
to children, we need to show them that feeding the spirit is just
as important as feeding the body.
*Ask the children to name the things that our bodies need in
order to stay alive and write these things down on a board or
easel. When you have a list of food, water, air, and so forth,
discuss where we get these things. Lead them to see that God is
the provider of all things we need to keep our body alive. Then,
ask them what we need in order to keep our spirit alive, and see
if they will name God's word as the food that feeds our spirit.
Show them that Jesus, the "bread of life," comes to us in the
word of God and gives us eternal life.
*Hand out pictures of several different kinds of food and
several things that are not food. Include a picture of a Bible.
Tell the children to separate the pictures, putting those things
which are food into one area and the things that are not food
into another. When they finish, see if they have put the picture
of the Bible in the food section. (Probably they won't have done
so.) Discuss with them how the Bible as God's word is food for
the spirit and how Jesus is the "bread of life."
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Bring several different kinds of bread and display them.
Set a Bible among the breads. Ask the children if they can
identify the various breads and see if any identify the Bible as
a kind of bread. Talk about Jesus as the "bread of life."
