The Bread of Life
Children's sermon
Object:
bread
Good morning! Long before Jesus was born, the people of God
were in the desert -- a "wilderness." I wonder if one of you
could tell me the story of how God's people were in the
wilderness and were about to die. (Let them answer.) God told
them he would protect them. As a sign, God gave them food to
eat. What was the food called? (Let them answer.) It was
called "manna." Every morning the people in the desert would go
out and find manna on the ground. It was a white, fine, flake-
like food the people could eat. The people were commanded to
gather enough for one day's meal. The manna left on the ground
quickly disappeared when the sun warmed the earth. Each day
there would be enough to eat, but not to store. Each day the
people had to trust that God would provide for them.
Even though the manna kept the people of God from starving to death, they still died of other causes. Jesus compares himself to this manna that fed God's people. He calls himself "the Bread of Life." Those who believe in him will never die. They have the promise that God gives them all they need for eternal life and all they need is Jesus Christ.
We have bread at church during Holy Communion. The bread reminds us that Jesus said he was the Bread of Life. It reminds us that when we believe in him, we shall never die. Our bodies will die, but we shall nevertheless have eternal life and go to heaven.
Today I want to give each of you a piece of this loaf of bread. I'm going to give each of you a piece and when I do I want you to close your eyes and remember that Jesus said he is the Bread of Life and that all who believe shall live eternally. (Do it.)
You have the promise of Jesus that you have eternal life. This bread does not last, but the promises of Jesus last for all eternity.
Dear Bread of Life: Thank you for giving us eternal life. Amen.
