Build your house on rock
Children's sermon
Object:
sand in a pail
Good morning, boys and girls. I just came back from the beach.
I brought some sand in my pail. One thing I love to do at the
beach is to make houses out of sand. How many of you like to make
houses out of sand when you go to the beach? (Let them answer.)
There's only one thing wrong with my sand houses. Whenever the
waves hit them they fall apart! That reminds me of today's
lesson. I have a feeling that when Jesus was a boy he may have
made sand houses at the beach also. He knew that when water hits
sand everything falls apart.
Listen to what Jesus says about building things on sand. Jesus said that people who don't listen to what Jesus says are foolish people. They are like people who build their house on sand. The water always comes and knocks the houses over! Jesus also said that wise people, who listen to what he says, are like people who build their house on solid land. All of your houses and our church are built on solid land. Water wouldn't knock our houses or this church over.
Jesus was a very smart person. When he was talking about building your house on sand he was really talking about people, not houses. He was telling people that if they don't listen and follow him, their lives may be filled with trouble and unhappiness. Jesus was also telling people that if they follow him and listen to what he says, then their lives will be centered on good things. Jesus wants all of us to build our lives around him. He is the solid foundation. When we learn to love Jesus, follow him, listen to what he says and have faith in him, our lives will be safe from harm.
So the next time you go to the beach, have fun and build all the sand houses you want. Don't worry if the water washes them all away. Remember, too, to build your life around Jesus. When you do that you are doing the right thing. You will be a wise person.
