A changing face

modeling clay
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought some clay for you to see today. Have you all played with clay before? (let them answer) You can make lots of things out of clay. What do you like to make out of clay? (let them each tell one thing) I can make a mountain with my clay. (make in the shape of a mountain) Or I can make a valley. (put an indentation in the top of the mountain) Have you ever been on a mountain? (let them answer) A mountain can be very steep and only mountain climbers can climb it with ropes and special hooks. Or a mountain can be just the ground getting higher and higher. Jesus was on one of those kinds of mountains one day with a few of his friends. Why do you think they went up a mountain? (let them answer) I think they liked it up on the mountain because it was quiet and it was away from all the crowds of people that followed Jesus to hear his stories. I think sometimes Jesus got tired and had to get away from all that. While he was up on the mountain, Jesus was praying. While he was praying, the Bible says his face changed. Let's see if we can make a face with this clay. (make a face) I can make this face change by making it sad (put a frown on it) or happy. (put a smile on it) What kinds of things make your face look happy? (let them answer) When someone says something nice to me, it changes my face and makes it happy. When someone says something mean, it changes my face and makes it sad. Jesus' face changed while he was praying and talking to God. Do you think it was happy or sad? (let them answer) I think Jesus liked talking to God. I think it made him very happy. After Jesus' face changed, Jesus' friends heard a voice say, "This is my Son, my Chosen, listen to him." God said Jesus was special. Maybe that's what made Jesus' face change. (make a smile on the face of clay) God chose Jesus to tell people that they were all special and that should make us all happy. We're all chosen by God!
