Children of light
Children's sermon
Object:
a flashlight
Good morning! Today, I want to read one verse from the New Testament lesson again. Don't worry: it's short! (read verse 13) The lesson says that things in darkness will be uncovered when light shines on them. (hold up the flashlight) I use this flashlight to help me see when it is dark. If I lose something under my bed, for example, my flashlight shines in the dark corners. The darkness isn't dark anymore once the light shines on it. The light is more powerful than the darkness.
Did you know that today's scripture tells us to be "children of the light"? Does that mean to be little flashlights? (get responses) Well, sort of. When we do what is good and right and true, we are like lights in the darkness of the world around us. When we do that, the dark things in the world aren't so dark anymore. Just like when I shine my flashlight, the light kind of chases away the darkness. Doing good things is a great way to shine our lights in the world. Help me think of some ways that we can be lights by doing good things. (spend a moment talking with the children about this)
Doing good things is one way to let our light shine. Darkness can represent bad things, but when the lights are on, the darkness runs away. This week, think of ways that you can be a light and help there be less darkness in the world.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, show us how to be children of light. Show us how to let our lights shine in the world so that the world is a better place. Amen.
