Choosing a ruler
Children's sermon
Object:
a purple cloth or cape
Good morning, boys and girls. (Hold up the cloth or cape.) What do you
think of when you see a purple robe or cape? (Let them respond.) Some of
you think of a king or a queen. Have you ever played dress-up and you got
to
be the king or queen? (Let them respond.) Sometimes it's fun to be the one
in charge that everyone else has to listen to.
There are lots of stories in the Bible about kings. There is Saul, the first king of God's people. Then there is David. He was chosen king while he was a shepherd boy. Then after David was Solomon. Solomon was the king who was best known for his great wisdom.
How do people choose kinds? (Let them respond.) It was usually a man's first born son back in the time of Saul, David and Solomon. But not always. Sometimes it was someone the people chose because the person was a good leader and very wise. Some kings did a very good job, but others the people didn't like and often found a way to get rid of them. The people didn't like all of their kings. Some kings weren't fair and kind.
Today is a special day called Christ the King Sunday. It's a day when we remember how kind and good and fair Jesus was. Was Jesus a king like David or Solomon with a crown and a purple robe? (Let them respond.) No, Jesus was a special kind of king. He didn't own lots of land or rule over people telling them what to do. Jesus has a special place that he is king over. It is our hearts. How can Jesus be a king in our hearts? (Let them respond.) Jesus rules us with love and kindness and gentleness. Jesus wants us to treat other people that way, too. When we treat other people with love and kindness we are honoring the ruler of our heart -- Jesus!
