Choosing up sides
Children's sermon
Object:
some white and black marbles and some candy
Good morning! I'd like to play a little game with you this
morning. I brought along some candy (show the candy). and I'm
going to give you a chance to win some. Here's how we will play
the game. In this container, I have two different colored
marbles. I will let each of you draw one out. If you get a white
marble, you win a candy. If you get a black one, you lose and
don't get a candy. Do you all understand the game? (Let them
answer and each draw out a marble.)
Some of you are happy because you won candy, and some are
not happy because you didn't. How would you like it if God worked
that way? What if God just threw all our names in a container and
drew some out that would get to go to Heaven and the others would
not. Would you like that? (Let them answer.) No, we surely
wouldn't like that, and that isn't how God does it. He doesn't
leave it up to each of us to pick a marble or something and see
if we're lucky enough to get a good one. No, He chooses us! Jesus
says in the Bible, "You did not choose me but I chose you." Jesus
has chosen us to be his people. He calls us by his word and gives
us faith so that we can believe in him. He doesn't leave it up to
us to be lucky or unlucky. Aren't you glad that Jesus has chosen
us to be his people? (Let them answer.) Just as Jesus chose us, I
am going to choose all of you to win the candy so even if you
drew a black marble, I still want you to have a candy. (Give the
losers a candy.) Let's thank Jesus for choosing us.
Dear Jesus: We thank you so much for choosing us to be your
people. Help us to live as your people, obeying your commandments
and doing all that you want us to do. Amen.
