Christ is our cornerstone
Children's sermon
Object:
make a rubbing of your church cornerstone
(Note: As a variation of this lesson, invite your church
historian or an older member to tell a story about the
construction of your church building.)
Good morning, boys and girls. Does anyone recognize this? (Show the rubbing and let them answer.) This is a rubbing of our church cornerstone. (Explain where the cornerstone is located, and read the words on it to the children.) This is a very important stone in our church building. It is important because our church is built on top of it. It was laid in place in a special ceremony when the construction of our church building began. Most churches and many other important buildings have cornerstones. Often the cornerstone has a hole in it where important things are placed. Sometimes people place Bibles in it, photographs and other things. Then the cornerstone is sealed and the construction of the church begins. So this cornerstone is important to us. It reminds us of the starting point of our church. It tells everyone who goes by and sees it that we are God's people. It tells people who see our cornerstone that this is a house of God. It invites anyone who is a follower of God to come and worship with us.
Today's lesson tells us that there is someone who is the cornerstone of our faith in God. In him the entire church is joined together and grows. Who do you think is the cornerstone of our faith in God? (Let them answer.) Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith in God. When we have faith in Jesus we grow as Christians and as a church. The next time you see a cornerstone on a building remember that Jesus is our cornerstone. When we have faith in Jesus we grow.
