Christianity is like jelly beans
Children's sermon
Object:
a jar of jelly beans (many colors)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like to eat
jelly beans? (Hold up your jar and let them answer.) I happen to
love jelly beans. I know that some people like certain colors
better than others. I like jelly beans so much that it doesn't
matter which color I'm eating. Which colors do you like? (Let
them answer.)
Different colors have different flavors, but they are all fun to eat. Jelly beans also make me think of this morning's Bible story. Jelly beans make me think of Christians. Christians have different colors and different ideas about what is important when they worship God. Even so, all Christians belong to God.
The Bible story tells us that Christians worship God in different ways. Some Christians think that how you pray is the most important part about worshiping God. Some Christians think that silence is the most important thing about worshiping God. Other Christians think that volunteering to help others is the most important thing about worshiping God.
Some Christians worship in houses. Some Christians worship in large cathedrals. Some Christians worship outdoors. Some Christians listen to the radio or television for their worship. As you can see, there are many different ways to worship God. Some Christians believe that one way is more important than another way. Even so, all Christians belong to God.
That's why I think jelly beans remind me of Christians. There are many different colors and flavors of jelly beans. There are many different kinds of Christians. However, they all have one thing in common. Can anyone tell me what that is? (Let them answer.) All Christians belong to God.
The next time you eat some jelly beans, remember all the different kinds of Christians. (Pass out the jelly beans, one or two to each child.)
