Clean hands, clean heart
Children's sermon
Object:
a bar of soap
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a bar of soap with me this morning. What do you do with soap? (Let them answer.) Right. You use soap to clean yourself. I want to tell you about a boy your age who needed some soap. He was playing outside with some friends. They were having a great time. It had rained earlier in the day, so the ground was wet. The friends were having such a good time that none of them noticed that there was mud all over them. The boy's boots were muddy, his pants were muddy, his shirt was muddy and his hands were muddy! (Exaggerate more with each new "muddy" on this list.) When it was time to go home he walked into his house and his parents said, "Stop there. Take off your muddy clothes and get in the bath tub!"
His parents washed his clothes with soap and water and the boy took a bath with soap and water! Soon the boy and his clothes were clean again. Has this ever happened to you? This story reminds me of this morning's lesson. The lesson says to clean your hands and purify your hearts. We know that we can clean our hands with soap and water. How can we clean our hearts? (Let them answer.)
Here's what I want you to remember about cleaning your hearts. God wants us to have clean hearts. You can't use soap and water to clean your hearts like you clean your hands or clothes. To have a clean heart means that we must love other people. We must help those who need our help. We must pray for others. We must be kind to others. We mustn't say bad things or think bad thoughts about others. God wants all of us -- everyone here this morning - - to have a clean heart. The next time you get really muddy remember that soap and water will clean your hands. Soap and water won't clean your heart. You must be kind to other people to have a clean heart.
