Come and see
Children's sermon
Object:
invitation cards with the words "Come and See" on them
August 24 is known as Saint Bartholomew's Day. We've all
heard about Saint Patrick's Day or Saint Nicholas' Day, but most
of us have not heard about Saint Bartholomew. His other name is
"Nathanael," which is a name meaning "gift of God." Everyone who
becomes a believer in Jesus is like a "gift of God." Probably
his name Nathanael was given to him like a nickname. Do any of
you have nicknames? (Let them answer.) Nathanael became an
apostle -- a follower of Jesus -- because someone else invited
him to "come and see." Do any of you know the name of the person
who invited Nathanael to "come and see"? (Let them answer.)
His name was Philip. You see, Nathanael came from the town of
Cana. Not too far from this town was another town called
Nazareth. They must have been enemies of some sort, because when
Philip tells Nathanael about Jesus, Nathanael wonders, "Can
anything good come out of Nazareth?" I guess Nathanael had his
mind all made up about anyone who came from Nazareth.
Many people today have their minds made up about Jesus and about Jesus' church. They wonder, "Can anything good come out of the church?" Their minds are made up already. But we can be like Philip and invite people to "come and see."
Maybe you have a friend who has his or her mind already made up about Sunday school or church. Maybe they haven't even thought much about it. But they might, if you told them, "Come and see what it's all about."
I made up some cards that you can use this week to invite one of your friends to "come and see" what goes on here at church. You can give them one of these cards. It says right here on the front of the card, "Come and see." (Pass them to each of the children.)
Each person who comes to church is like a "gift of God" like Nathanael. All of us can be like Philip and tell our friends about Jesus and invite them to church and Sunday school. One way we can do that is to give them this card.
Dearest Jesus: Help us invite others to "come and see." Amen.
