Come and see
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The name "Nathanael" means "gift of
God." Certainly every believer is such a "gift of God." Such a
gift would not have been possible in today's reading if Philip
had not issued the invitation to "come and see."
* Make "Come and see" invitations for your children to give to their friends, neighbors, or relatives. These can be individually designed for each recipient. Brainstorm with your children who possible recipients might include.
* Your fall Sunday school "Rally Day" may be coming soon. If so, make "Come and see" invitations for the entire Sunday school. Distribute them several days prior to your rally day. Encourage the children to think beyond the small circle of children in their classes to friends not in Sunday school.
* In today's lesson Nathanael is amazed at what Jesus knew about him before even meeting him. Jesus responds, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these" (v. 50). In the same way, the beauty and wonder of God's creation is nothing compared to what lies ahead for the believer. That's why we want to "go and tell."
* Each person who believes becomes a Nathanael -- a "gift of God." John's gospel is the only one calling Bartholomew "Nathanael." The name Bartholomew means "son of Tolmai." The name Nathanael may be more like a nickname. Explore the nicknames of your children. As Christians we all have a nickname: "gift of God!"
* Jesus once compared the kingdom of God to a marriage feast. We issue wedding invitations; how appropriate we issue worship invitations!
* Relating the text to life: In the body of Christ, each and every person is important. The value of people is one of the great lessons of Sunday church school.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing "Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling" or "I Love to Tell the Story."
* Distribute "Come and See" invitations to Rally Day.
