... for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. (Romans 11:29)
Good morning, boys and girls. What color is your kitchen? (let them answer) What color are the walls in your bedroom? (let them answer) Do you like the color of your kitchen and your bedroom? (let them answer) I brought along a color chart of all the paints that this company makes. I want you to look at it and pick out the color you would like in your kitchen. (let several of them pick the colors that they would like -- some for their bedroom and some for the kitchen) I thought you said you liked the color of your kitchen and I thought you said you liked the color of your bedroom, didn't you? (let them answer) The colors you chose are not the same colors that are in your bedroom and kitchen. Did you change your mind? (let them answer) Would anyone like to choose another color than the color that they just chose? (let them answer) You are changing the color you want in your bedroom again.
I think you change your mind a lot, don't you? First you like the color that it is and then you choose a different color and now some of you want to change it again. That is a lot of mind changing. Some people call it being wishy-washy.
One of the things about God is that he has a real plan. God doesn't change his mind about the things he has given to you. As a matter of fact, God doesn't change his love for you even if you are not good to him. God gave us his word and he doesn't change it. God didn't take Jesus away from the cross even though Jesus asked him to consider changing his mind. Of course, Jesus prayed to God and said that he didn't want God to change his mind about the cross if it was the way the Father wanted to do it.
If you go out today and commit a really bad sin, like lying to your best friend, God is not going to turn you into something ugly or keep you from learning in school. God gave you many gifts and God doesn't change his mind or feel sorry for you because he gave them to you.
God is very good to you and God stands behind his promises. When we sin, we hope God doesn't change his mind but he hopes you will change your mind and come back to him and ask for forgiveness. If you don't, God is still going to love you and make a place for you in his world with the hope that you will want to change and be part of his life forever. Amen.
