Come, drink
Children's sermon
Object:
a pitcher of ice water and some glasses
Good morning! Have any of you ever been really, really
thirsty? Perhaps you were playing outside and running and jumping
and doing all kinds of things when, suddenly, you felt thirsty.
You looked around and there was no water anywhere! But when you
went in your home, you saw something like this -- a nice, cool
pitcher of water! Umm! How satisfying! Maybe one of you here this
morning is thirsty? (Offer any who are thirsty a drink.)
There are many ways of being thirsty. We can, of course, be thirsty for water. But we can be thirsty for other things. Once I did something that made me feel really bad. I knew it was wrong. I felt guilty. I had a need, a thirst, for forgiveness. I needed to hear loved ones say they forgave me the wrong I did to them.
Another way of being thirsty is being in a big, big store and getting lost. I remember when I was a child I was in a large store and couldn't find my parents. I felt so lonely and afraid. I was thirsty for my parents at that time.
All people at times get thirsty for God. It's not like our need for water, but it is a need just as real. And when we feel that thirst for God, we need God. Only God can satisfy us.
Jesus talked about this thirst for God once. He said that it is the Holy Spirit who quenches our thirst. It is that part of God called the Holy Spirit that makes our souls full again. God wants to be there and fill our need whenever our souls long for God. The pitcher of God, like the pitcher of cold water, is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brings us deep satisfaction.
Dear Holy Spirit: Fill our souls full with God. Amen.
