Come to me!
Children's sermon
Object:
a canteen and a Bible
Good morning! Have any of you ever gone on a long hike? (Let
them answer.) When you go on a long hike, it is a good idea to be
well prepared. What kinds of things would you take with you on a
hike? (Let them answer, and if they don't mention a canteen, add
it to the list.)
You certainly would want one of these (show the canteen).
You could get very thirsty on a hike, and you will need water.
Now, what if you drank all the water in your canteen and you were
still thirsty, where would you get some more water? (Let them
answer.) Yes, you would go to a stream, a lake, or perhaps there
would be water taps along the trail where you could get more
water. You would certainly not try to get water out of the dirt
or the rocks or out of a tree, would you? (Let them answer.) The
point is that you would only get water out of a pure water
source. A source that you knew would give you good, safe water to
drink.
Now Jesus tells us that if we are thirsty, we should come to
him to drink. Do you think he is talking about regular water?
(Let them answer.) No, he isn't. He's talking about being thirsty
for spiritual things, knowing about God and so forth. If we want
to know about God and Jesus, where should we go? (Let them
answer.) Yes, we go here to God's word (show the Bible). Just as
we couldn't find water in the dirt or the rocks, we can't find
out about God and Jesus if we don't look in the Bible and other
books that help us understand the Bible. As Jesus says, "Let
anyone who is thirsty come to me!"
Let's thank God for giving us the pure water of His word.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You so much for giving us Your
Holy Word so that we can come to it when we are thirsty for
knowledge about You and Jesus and all the other spiritual things
that are so important for us to know. Amen.
