Come to the party!

a party invitation
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever been
invited to a party, or had a party where you invited others to
attend? (Let them raise their hands.) Did you receive or send
invitations to the party? (Show the invitation.) Parties are
really fun. What is the best part of a party? (Let them answer.)
If it is a birthday party, I think the best part is when someone
blows out the candles that are on the cake. Then everyone gets a
piece to eat.
Jesus told a story about a party. In his story he compared the party to the kingdom of heaven. Jesus said that a king was giving a party for his son. The invitations were sent to very important people. This was to be the best party ever given. It would have all the cake and ice cream you could have. There would be party gifts for all who attended. The strange thing is that all who were invited refused to come! Can you imagine being invited to a party like this and not going? Can you imagine passing up on all that cake and ice cream and all the party games? That's what happened in this story.
Since all who were invited refused to come, the king sent more invitations. The invitations went to everyone who was on the street. Invitations went to young people, old people, poor people, sick people -- everyone who wasn't invited the first time. The king didn't even know some of the people who received invitations. These people were happy to come to the party.
Now I want to tell you who this story is about. God is the king who sent the invitations. The party was for his son Jesus. The people who didn't attend the party are those who choose not to follow Jesus. The people who came to the party are the faithful followers of Jesus. Jesus tells us something very important in this story. He says that everyone is invited to be part of God's heavenly kingdom. There is only one requirement to enter the kingdom. It is to have faith in Jesus. When we have faith, we are invited to enter God's kingdom.
